You Are NOT The Storm

Somewhere along the way, most of us picked up the belief that one day we'll graduate from pain.
That if we read enough books… meditate long enough… heal enough… succeed enough… evolve enough…
we'll finally arrive at a place where we don't feel insecure, sad, angry, scared, overwhelmed, jealous, or low.

Have you arrived at that place yet?

Because I haven't.

And the older I get—and the more people I work with—the clearer it becomes:

Pain, low moods, shaky mornings, busy minds, insecure moments…
they're all part of the human experience.

Not a sign that something is wrong.
Simply a sign that something in us is moving.

One way I like to describe this is emotional weather.
Sunny moments, cloudy stretches, sudden storms… all passing through the landscape of your system.

But here's what is optional:

Believing the weather says something about you.
Believing the weather is permanent.
Believing the weather needs to change or be fixed.

The moment you start to see that your emotional weather is just that—weather—something profound shifts.

Because no matter how intense a storm feels,
you are not the storm.
You are the sky it moves through.

And when you begin to experientially know this—not as a concept, but as a lived truth— everything changes.

You stop trying to manage, suppress, outrun, or “fix” your experience.
You stop assuming your low mood is a problem that needs a strategy.
You stop believing your fear means danger.
You stop thinking your anger means you're regressing.
You stop treating your sadness as something to solve.

Instead, you recognize what's actually happening:

Something tender is passing through.
Something ancient is unwinding.
Something misunderstood is asking to be seen.
Something in your system is reorganizing toward more truth.

And the safest, most transformative thing you can do is simply let it move.

Because when you stop fighting your weather, your weather stops fighting you.

This is the freedom that becomes available when you begin to know who you truly are
the awareness behind the experience,
the sky behind the storm,
the steadiness that has been here your whole life.

And this is a key part of the curriculum for The School for Humaning Well.

Not learning how to control your emotional weather…
Not trying to bypass pain or force joy…
but discovering the profound safety of the sky.

In this six-month experience, you'll learn to:

  • Recognize suffering as it's happening (before it drives you)

  • Meet your system honestly and gently (instead of abandoning yourself)

  • See through long-held misunderstandings that create pain

  • Return home to your deepest truth with more consistency

  • Access wisdom that doesn't come from effort—only from connection

Because the goal isn't to eliminate storms. That denies a part of our humanity.

The intention is to remember that you're the sky—to experientially know this deep in your bones.

That's where reliable steadiness lives.
That's where true clarity resides.
That's where wisdom is always whispering your next step.

And when you touch that place—even for a moment—everything changes:

Not because you're doing more,
but because you've softened into the mystery of life's intelligence.

This is what we practice inside The School for Humaning Well.
Not conceptually—experientially.

Each student comes with a different “area of life” that feels charged—business, health, relationship, money, anxiety, fear, parenting—
but no matter the content, the path forward is the same: acknowledging the experience that's present and wants to be met.

Slow down.
Notice.
Feel.
See through the misunderstanding.
Return to truth.

If it sounds simple, it is—in concept. Applying it? Well…that's another story. Our egos don't like to surrender and have lots of defenses to guard against letting go.

So…we practice. Again and again. Each time learning more about ourselves, our design, and our needs—which only creates greater intimacy and naturally invites us home.
