Where Is the Love?

In case you missed it (which I highly doubt) this week was Valentine's Day.No matter your feelings about the day itself, it invites us into a worthwhile inquiry. Valentine's Day encourages us to consider and prioritize love in our life. Love is much more than romantic love—which is often interpreted to be the main focus of this holiday.

As much as I love romantic love (which is true), love is so much bigger than that.

The truth is: Love has been with you your whole life. It's why you've made it this far. The fact that you're here, reading this today is a demonstration of the love you received. Be that through a parent, aunt/uncle, grandparent, friend, teacher, mentor, sibling, boss, co-worker or any addition to or combination of these.

The ego mind tends to create a narrow definition for big topics like love, happiness, and success. Ask yourself: What is love according to my ego?

You'll find your answer is full of limitations and conditions—as if love must come to you in one specific way or it doesn't count.

Most of people on the planet believe that answer is true love. It's not.

You can know this because you can also ask yourself: What is love according to my Soul? What is love according to the "I" who is made of the same stuff as the stars, birds, trees, even this device you are reading this article on?

This answer is likely expansive and inclusive.

However, our awareness of love when left unexplored and unchecked diminishes. We forget. That is part of the nature of the mind. We go unconscious to our fear-based programming and miss the love that's already here.

LOVE INVENTORY

I first heard this term from Oprah and thought it was fantastic. A love inventory is about taking note of the love that is currently in your life.

Consider who (four-legged friends included) has recently:

  • made you laugh.

  • taken you on a spontaneous adventure.

  • given you a shoulder to cry on.

  • made you a meal or invited you to dinner.

  • offered you a place to stay.

  • believed in you.

  • made you feel safe.

  • hugged you so big it brought tears to your eyes.

  • listened so deeply you felt like the only person in the world.

  • told you how great you are.

These are all acts of love. They are simple, and because of that they often get overlooked.

Carve out some time today to consider your own love inventory. There is a force both seen an unseen that is championing you, supporting you, encouraging you...and loving you right now.

Giving attention to that will bring more love into your life. That's the way it works. What we appreciate, appreciates.
